On May 18, Jim Stahlmann shared a multigenerational North St. Paul family story that centered on a longtime residence at 1st St & 1st Ave. The family lived in the stone house for almost 70 years after migrating from Germany. This history included the years of brewing beer, time spent in the State Legislature, law enforcement, and operating a mortuary that is still operating today. Throughout the talk, details of the house itself and the immediate neighborhood were also presented. Stahlmann families remain active in North Saint Paul today, carrying forward the spirit of the house at “First and First” in their enduring love for the city.
On April 20, The museum welcomed the family behind two of North St. Paul’s newest and most beloved businesses: Sweeties Candies and Flyby Coffee. Owners Stacy Loveland and Zach Tarras, along with Stacy’s mom Kathy “Nonna” Ward and nephew Jacob Rogan, joined us to share the winding, good‐humored story of how their ventures came to life. Their success, they emphasized, comes down to hustle, heart, and a whole lot of family teamwork. As Stacy put it, her job is to “manage the crazy,” and she “would choose the crazy any day.”
After some months of winter closure, the museum reopened with an open house on March 16, which explored the history of some of 7th Avenue's most recognizable commercial buildings over the years. The community was able to see and contribute to our information with post-it notes, and enjoyed conversation, coffee, and cookies.
